NodeMCU is an open source IoT platform. It uses the Lua scripting language. It is based on the eLua project, and built on the ESP8266 SDK 0.9.5. It uses many open source projects, such as lua-cjson, and spiffs. It includes firmware which runs on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi SoC, and hardware which is based on the ESP-12E module.
Note: There is nothing called version V2 and V3 of NodeMCUs as these are all just marketing terms. The basic circuit and module is the same for all the boards just the manufacturer varies and the quality of components varies based on your budget. The Lolin boards uses CH230G whereas Amica boards come with SiLabs's CP2102 chipset USB Serial converter. Lolin boards are 30% larger in size and Amica boards have a stronger reset circuit compared to Lolin boards.
